Happy Birthday to the Vibe Art Studio!

Today marks the third anniversary of opening the Vibe Art Studio!  Three and a half years ago, I was fortunate to have been introduced to Laura Streib, founder and director of Vibe of Portland.  Laura and I realized that our goals of offering quality art classes to children were the same.  I began teaching for Vibe of Portland soon after.  We were both certain that we did not want to offer “messy art” to our students, but rather an engaging arts educational experience.  Vibe’s Art Studio offers quality creative experiences where students are encouraged to explore and asked to stretch their boundaries.  In the past three years, our goals have also been to expose student to quality art materials and art history.

There have been many great moments for me while teaching at the Studio during the past three years.  It has been rewarding to form long-term relationships with students and watch them grow as artists and people over the last three years.  Vibe has a long term partnership with Mt. Tabor Preschool for after-preschool enrichment classes.  It was been a pleasure forming relationships with the families, watching these students grow during their two years of preschool and then seeing their younger siblings come to art class when it’s their turn.

While teaching at the studio, I have also been fortunate to teach and collaborate with some great teachers such as Mary, Jameson and Luke for Vibe’s Art Studio’s summer camps.  I love seeing the community that develops among the students by the end of the week, the pride and satisfaction that our students take in their work by the culmination and the collaborative pieces of art that they have created during these camps.  I have also loved listening to the delight that some of our youngest students experience as they complete some of their first pieces of art.  “My mommy’s going to love it!.” is my favorite line that I’ve heard in the past three years.
I’m looking forward to watching our students and Vibe’s Art Studio grow in the coming years!

Changing Lives Through Music

Music can be a powerful instrument of social change. Whether it’s being played on the streets or taught within a classroom, music can powerfully shift youth culture and aid children living in poverty.  Venezuelan conductor of the L.A. Sumphony,  Gustavo Dudamel, is an influential musician who believes that music can get kids off the streets and inspire them to achieve their goals and dreams. In his native country, hundreds of thousands of children are participating in el sistema, a program encouraging children to sing and play classical music. This program has been so effective that music organizations all over the world are inspired each day.
